Documentary (T.1 2016) ^^^^^

6 types of DOCUMENTARY:

Poetic documentary:  Appeared in the 1920's, life like people were absent. The films ( doc.) were impressionistic and lyrical.

Expository documentary:   This type of documentary speaks directly to the viewer, often an authoritative figure is commentating. It proposes a strong point of view/ argument, this technique is used to persuade the viewer. During an Expository documentary a voice of a male may be used. Images are more important than anything else in this type of documentary, it relies on accounts and interpretation of the past.

Observational documentary:  It attempts to observe the lives lived with minimum intervention. This can be referred to as  a sub-genre as it falls somewhere in between a Poetic documentary and a Expository documentary. The 1960's saw its first observational documentary as there were technological advances that allowed the camera to become light weight portable and it also allowed sound recording to be synchronised. This type of documentary often inputs sound, voice-overs, music and re-anctments. This types of style aims for immediacy, intimacy and the revelation of an individual human character in ordinary situations.

Participatory documentary:  These filmmakers believe that is is impossible to alter or influence the events being filmed. During these documentaries the filmmaker and his/her crew are part of the film, by doing this the viewer gets a sense of how events/ situations might change due to the filmmakers presence. The interaction between filmmaker and subject becomes important element in these documentaries.

Reflexive documentary:  These films are a representation of events. Reflexive documentaries are the most self- conscious of all the other types of documentaries, it is deemed as highly skeptical.

Performative documentary:  Documentaries like this are very personal and experimental. It allows the viewer to have a different look/ opinion on the world. This sub-genre may deal with certain groups such as: gays, lesbians, women and  ethnic minorities.  Performative documentaries often link with political or historical means.
