Treatment

Introduction/Topic :

The music video would be to BeyoncĂ©’s song Pretty Hurts. Focusing on the stereotypes of woman and the pressure the media has on young girls to dress and look older than they are. It follows a journey of a teenager who has both brains and beauty that wants to look like the models on the front page of a magazine, soon realizing that she is hurting herself mentally by not eating correctly and forcing herself to endure pain and suffering by force vomit. Quitting dance to focus on her studies and using her brains instead of her looks.

Synopsis:

The opening shot will introduce a young girl starring at herself in the mirror, it will then be followed by a shot of the shelf containing multiple awards. The young girl is seen changing into a revealing red costume, putting hairspray in her hair. The young girl is seen applying makeup ( lipstick and eye shadow). It then cuts to a the girl practicing dancing provocatively/ seductively facing the camera. The girl does a few pirouettes and falls down. Cut to a medium shot of the girl sitting down with all her trophies and medals hanging around her neck with her head down. ( singing starts) Cut to a shot of the girl doing her homework, putting her spectacles down on the table beside her pencil case. The girl walks to the bathroom and stares at herself in the mirror, throwing her beauty products on the ground. She unties her hair, throws hair tie on the floor and runs fingers through hair to make it slightly messy. Placing tooth brush down on the table. Girl pulls her shirt down and looks at herself in the mirror and walks out of closet. Cut to the girl walking off stage and stops smiling. The girl walks into the dressing room and drinks water. ( chorus of song) A panning shot of five girls, judge comes on stage. Judge starts to speak and gestures to the girls. Two girls step forward, judge gives trophy to the main girl.

Pretty Hurts - Beyonce ( LYRICS)

[Verse 1:]
Mama said, "You're a pretty girl.
What's in your head, it doesn't matter
Brush your hair, fix your teeth.
What you wear is all that matters."

[Pre-Hook:]
Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I'm gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down

[Hook:]
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
We try to fix something but you can't fix what you can't see
It's the soul that needs the surgery

(Uh huh huh)

[Verse 2:]
Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says, "Bigger is better."
South beach, sugar free
Vogue says, "Thinner is better."

[Pre-Hook:]
Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I'm gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down

[Hook:]
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts (pretty hurts)
Pretty hurts (pretty hurts), we shine the light on whatever's worst
We try to fix something but you can't fix what you can't see
It's the soul that needs the surgery

[Bridge:]
Ain't got no doctor or pill that can take the pain away
The pain's inside and nobody frees you from your body
It's the soul, it's the soul that needs surgery
It's my soul that needs surgery
Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far
Then you break when the fake facade leaves you in the dark
You left with shattered mirrors and the shards of a beautiful girl

[Hook:]
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst (pretty hurts)
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
We try to fix something but you can't fix what you can't see
It's the soul that needs the surgery

[Outro:]
When you're alone all by yourself (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
And you're lying in your bed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Reflection stares right into you (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)

You stripped away the masquerade (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
The illusion has been shed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)

Yes
Uh huh huh

Examples:

Kygo- Sexual Healing ( originally Marvin Gaye)

Jonas Blues- Fast car ( originally Tracy Chapman)

David Guetta ft. Skylar Grey - Bang Bang ( originally Nancy Sinatra)

Sigala- Easy Love [ ABC] (originally Jackson 5)

Analysis

Kygo "Sexual Healing" music video 2013

No music video but, the has pictures of young pretty girls on the front page of the youtube video with a more upbeat tune drowning out the artist voice making the songs more about the beats and less about the singing.

Marvin Gaye "Sexual Healing" music video 1982

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjlSiASsUIs

The original version is more soothing to listen to compared to the remixed version of the song, the voice of the singer can be heard well and the instruments are just to support the artist. It features Marvin Gaye singing in a nightclub / jazz club accompanied by 4 women. Marvin as well as the four women are dressed smart. Women are represented as sex objects in this song this can be shown when Marvin looks at the doctors legs and his temperature rises, furthermore the lyrics " oh she do it right" and " when my temperatures rising I want sexual healing" and " its good for me". Lastly the lyrics " I cant wait for you to operate" and " lets make love tonight" imply that he has strong feelings.

Jonas Blue " Fast Car" music video 2016

This remixed version of a classic song created a meaningful story through the music video. The music video told a story of a girl wanting to get out of her run down neighbourhood to move to some place better and start a better life. The lyrics " I want a ticket to anywhere, anyplace is better"suggest to the viewer that she just wants to get out of her current situation and "starting from zero got nothing to lose"  she started out with nothing so she has nothing to lose if her dreams doesn't work out the way it was planned. The "new" version of this song is more upbeat to capture the attention of modern audiences, as they prefer something that they can dance with. Blue's version of the song had changed the verse around and swapped different verses around.

Tracy Chapman " Fast Car" music video 1988

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTIB10eQnA0

Although the original version of the songs does not have a music video component, the song is has a relax feel to it with only instruments being a guitar and a drum. The artist/ singer can be heard singing the song with emotion and feeling compared to Jonas Blue version where the artist was just singing the song. The original version of the song has a longer intro compared to the 2016 rendition, also the lyrics " Had a feeling that I could be someone, be someone" is repeated twice in the original whereas in the current song had change the lyrics to " I had a feeling that I could be someone, had a feeling that I could be someone" although a subtle change it still has a impact to the song.

David Guetta ft. Skylark Grey "Shot me down" 2014

This song does not have a music video but, has a lyrics video and in the lyric video is starts as a western pop art comic book strip featuring a cowgirl. Not only did the artist change the title of this song but, the song itself as has been turned into a pop/ party anthem song has a build up 50 seconds into the song and the musical interlude lasted 30 seconds before the next lyrics were sung. Adding additional lyrics that weren't written into the original " bang! wee! zap! pow!" before another music interlude the "newest" version of this song repeated the same lyrics for the whole song which lasted 3:12mins.

Cher/ Nancy Sinatra " Bang Bang" 1966

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8UYPtRlQUY

Used in the movie "Kill Bill" this song original written by CHER and sung by Nancy Sinatra. The original version is slower and less repetitive and sounds more acoustic with only a bass guitar as an instrument. The lyrics are more meaningful and there are much more verses in the original version of the song. This song is clearly about love and the connection both had for each other. The lyrics toward the end " He didn't even say goodbye, he didn't even take the time to lie, bang bang he shot me down bang bang" describes to us the emotional pain this woman is going through as a result of her boyfriend/ husband leaving her killing himself.

Sigala " Easy Love" / "ABC" 2015

This music video involves a bunch of children in a bright colourful setting, where the children get involve in a dance battle in various locations around Los Angeles. This video however, featured a lot of asians including the two main children, who happen to be partners as the song is suggesting young love. Also, at the beginning of the video it shows how a young boy sees the world through colour and song with sunglasses her found in a box. The song itself is a remixed version of The Jackson 5 song "ABC" changing the pitch of the singers voice and repeating the lyrics 4 times. Not only has the recent remix of this song completely changed and re-postioned the lyrics, the artist has also changed the title of the song ( probably because of royalty fees) as they would have already needed to pay to use the original song even though they remixed it and used different beats. This song is very repetitive and quite boring to listen to even though their aim might have been to make it upbeat and fun to dance to, the original song by The Jackson 5 managed to achieve this without making it sound too much like techno music.

Leaving their two daughters Annie the older daughter and Leila the younger daughter in a big mansion with their wacky but wise nanny and strange butler to look after the children. Little did they know that their dad had wrote in his will that if something ever should happen to him that the children would be then adopted by his half sister Evangeline an unkind selfish woman that only cares about the wealth she would inherit by her deceased brother. Struggling to fit in with the new routines and expectation set by their aunty the children learn to cope with the vast changes to their household. Everything that was once familiar to them is slowly becoming unrecognisable the children learn to close their eyes and escape to an imagined alternate universe as their father had once told them about where everything and everyone was jolly, where the one could taste the flowers and clouds and nothing was ever wrong. While at night the older daughter is constantly having nightmares and flashbacks of a suspicious figure standing in the background in most of her nightmares/ dreams  surrounding her parents death an especially her father as he was the main figure of her life up to that point. By observing the aunt closely from the words she says to specific movements she makes, Annie becomes more and more convinced that the suspicious figure in her nightmares is her aunty shocked by this she goes back to her alternate universe to calm herself down as she now knows that it is not safe for Annie and her sister to stay in the house, putting all the pieces together ( movements, phone calls in the middle of the night) Annie is now certain that her aunt Evangeline was present at the time of her parents death. She must now prove that her aunt was in fact there, explaining this to the nanny and the butler would come at a shock even though the nanny had already suspected that there was something a little odd about the way Evangeline was acting during her stay. With the help of Annie's imagination, the nanny, butler and Leila she is then able to defeat the aunty keeping all the wealth to themselves, sending the aunt off to prison.

Movies directed by Tim Burton

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

  • Actor Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham- Carter
  • Opening sequence visually captivating
  • Music and score by Danny Elfman ( used in a lot of Burton's movies)
  • Factory and town  is dark mostly black and grey
  • Visual features of Burton's movies
The Chocolate Factory

  • Family is not rich very poor
  •  Weird character: Charlie's grand aunt, going off topic " I love grapes" when talking about Willy Wonka
  • Flashback ( technique used in Burton movies): Factory is colourful
  • Costume colours at the factory are bright
  • Voice of Willy Wonka ( Depp) sounds odd- girlish
  • Chocolate place melts
  • Flipping from bright/ colourful to dark and dull to evoke mystery ( Burton)- camera shots are slightly canted and low angle

Type of Shots mainly used in Burton Films:

Similiar shots
-

  • The character Willy Wonka becomes a mysterious man ( Burton)
  • Uses the word " mystery" in the line " it certainly is a mystery"
  • Set/ Props: The dining table is a bedroom with a bed in which the grandparents sleep in: both grandparents sleep on the same bed directly facing each other

  • " Nothing's impossible Charlie"
  • Town at night is eerie and spooky
  • Costume are a mix of black, brown, dark brown, dark purple & stripes

Burton costume stripes:

  • Set in London ( his films are either set in London or America)
  • Fat kid Augustus: just like how in Alice in Wonderland Tweedledum and TweedleDee are referred to as "Fat Boys", Burton includes as Fat kid eating chocolate
Fat characters Burton film:

  •  Burton often uses autopsy in his movies: the furthest he could get to use this in a children's movie is in the form us raw meat like sausages
  • Choreographic movements in sync with music
  • Heads of animals are seen on the walls of the Salt's house
  • Stripes are used as this is a part of Burton costumes style signature: it is seen when Mr. Salt is dressed in a suite

  • " That was worse than the Fat Boy" referencing to Alice in Wonderland " Fat Boys" TweedleDum/Dee
  • Sense of Hope when Charlie is opening the wrapper
  • All extremely different characters and all together weird: Veruca Salt, Violet B, Augustus, Mike

  • Grandpa Joe is very weird; dancing
  • Charlie is very intelligent
  •  Although set in England there is no time period and in the Golden ticket is says " Be at the factory by 10am" but there is no address or city

  • Colourful display in the factory opening in contrast to the dull city
  • Wonka ( Depp) character is unique and eccentric costume is futuristic

  • Wonka ( Depp) high pitch voice, pale face and bob hair
  • Burton's main characters such as Willy Wonka and other main characters in his movies often don't have parents in his films this is a common theme throughout : Wonka misses his parents in particular his dad saying " Dad? Papa?" Almost going through a flashback but doesn't
  • Set design inside the chocolate factory different size trees and weirdly shaped and seize trees

  • As an auteur Burton has a hand with the scripts and because of his fascinating with the police department, modern technology, fingerprints and autopsy, he references cannibalism in the line " Everything in this room is edible, even I am edible but that is called cannibalism and is in fact frowned upon in most societies"
  • Oompa Lumpa short people that look identical to each other: Lumpa Land " I teach geography.... There is no such pla-" " Well then you'll know all about it and know what a terrible country it is."
  •  Lumpa Land made up world ( Burton)
  • Oompa Lumpa are even more weird and eccentric : dances around with a cocao bean on their head

  • Oompa Lumpa singing either oddly high or low there is no in-between
  • '' are wearing stripes sleeves which again is incorporated in every Burton Movie
  • Wonka ( Depp) is extremely sarcastic to the point of funny
